Resil Mojares to deliver 2013 Adrian Cristobal Lecture on Feb. 20

The Unyon ng mga Manunulat sa Pilipinas (UMPIL) and the family of Adrian E. Cristobal proudly announce this year’s Adrian E. Cristobal Lecturer, Dr. Resil Mojares. Mojares will deliver his lecture on February 20, 2013, 1-4 pm, at Room 520, 5th Floor, Tower II, RCBC Plaza, 6819 Ayala Avenue cor Gil Puyat, Makati City. Moderating the discussions is Dr. Rebecca Añonuevo Cuñada.

A scholar, critic, and award-winning writer, Mojares is one of the most respected intellectuals today. A retired professor of the University of San Carlos in Cebu City, he was founding director the Cebuano Studies Center which pioneered area studies in the Philippines in the 1970’s. He is the author of acclaimed critical books Waiting for Mariang Makiling: Essays in Philippine Cultural History (Ateneo de Manila U Press, 2002) and Brains of the Nation: Pedro Paterno, T. H. Pardo De Tavera, Isabelo De Los Reyes and the Production of Modern Knowledge (Ateneo de Manila U Press, 2006).

Mojares joins National Artist for Literature Virgilio S. Almario and poet and critic Gemino Abad, who in 2012 and 2011, respectively, were selected by the Umpil Board and the Foundation, to deliver relevant and engaging thoughts on culture and ideas for this series.

The prestigious Adrian Cristobal Lecture Series celebrates the contributions of the esteemed “litterateur, fictionist, playwright, essayist, satirist, (and) newspaper columnist,” who “lived a public intellectual life.”

“By nature and purpose,” reads the lecture primer, “his writing sought to restore the value of intelligence for the modern and ordinary Filipino reader who, by what he or she consumes in most media, has been thoroughly deprived of it.”

The lecture is open to the public, but interested attendees are requested to pre-register through the Umpil Secretariat. Contact Ms. Eva Garcia Cadiz (09178453721, gondour03@yahoo.com) or Dr. Michael M. Coroza, Umpil Secretary General (09477219249, mcoroza@ateneo.edu).
