On Feb. 14, 2013, Kuwentista ng mga Tsikiting (KUTING), the country’s premier organization of writers for children, celebrated the International Book Giving Day by giving books, toys and other educational materials to children with cancer at the Philippine Children’s Medical Center. The organization solicited the books and toys from its members and friends.
The International Book Giving Day is an initiative by various children’s literature bloggers around the world, including the Philippines’ Tarie Sabido (Asia in the Heart). It aims to increase the access of children to books. The activity is also a post-celebration of the World Cancer Day, which falls every 4th of February.
Besides handing books, KUTING member Liwliwa Malabed read the story “Polliwog’s Wiggle” (written by Heidi Emily Eusebio-Abad and illustrated by Beth Parrocha-Doctolero). The children, as well as the parents and guardians present, enjoyed following the main character’s transformation and singing a song related to the story. Since there were a lot of books, KUTING also distributed books to children at the out-patient area of the center. –Michael Jude Tumamac, KUTING
