The University of the Philippines-Diliman College of Arts and Letters, together with the UST Publishing House, will launch Professor Emeritus Steve Villaruz’s “Walking Through Philippine Theater” series on Feb 21, 2013, 4 pm, at the Claro M. Recto Hall, College of Arts and Letters, UP-Diliman.
In three volumes, which collect almost sixty years of renowned choreographer, choreologist and critic Steve Villaruz’s dance and music criticism, published in various journals and broadsheets here and abroad, the “Walking Through Philippine Theater” series not only furnishes readers with “the basics in reading dance and helps in appreciating various kinds of creative movement,” but also conveys/embodies the discipline of reading, writing, and living dance and theater criticism.
The first and second volumes gather Villaruz’s dance criticism—his observations and commentaries on various issues on Philippine dance, his profiles on dancers both here and abroad, and his reviews on dance productions mounted in the country beginning in the 1960s. The third volume contains his theater criticism. Each chapter is preceded by introductory essays from scholar and critic Ruth Pison, and dancer and choreographer Myra Beltran.
