Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Bro. Armin Luistro, FSC, will keynote this year’s “Ambagan: Pambansang Kumperensiya sa Paglikom ng mga Salita Mula sa Iba’t Ibang Wika sa Filipinas” on July 25-27, 2013, at the Ateneo de Manila University.
Ambagan is spearheaded by the Filipinas Institute of Translation (FIT), and is held biannually. Held for the first time in 2009, Ambagan has ever since provided a forum for the linguistic exploration of all the Philippine languages like Bikol, Cebuano, Hiligaynon, Ilokano, Ifugao, Kinaray-a, Magindanaw, Maranao, Kapampangan, Pangasinan, Tagalog, Tausug, and Waray. It seeks to respond to the Constitutional Provisions stipulating that “(t)he national language of the Philippines is Filipino. As it evolves, it shall be further developed and enriched on the basis of existing Philippine and other languages.”
The conference seeks to propose a strategy in enriching the Filipino language–by way of tapping into the rich mine of vocabulary from the different languages of the Philippines for inclusion in the corpus of the national language, a best example of which is the pay-yo (with variants payaw or payew) of the the Cordilleras.
For the longest time, textbooks referred to the pay-yo as the rice terraces or hagdan-hagdang palayan, a showcase of indigenous agricultural technology. Pay-yo ever since has been popularized after the concept was introduced to Filipino, a language that is both dynamic and informed by the languages of the Philippines.
Exciting papers on proposed terms and concepts are lined up for this year’s Ambagan. The conference is calling all Filipino language scholars researchers, enthusiasts, as well as teachers and students to participate. To register, contact Dr. Michael M. Coroza, Ambagan Director at firstname.lastname@example.org. The conference charges P 3,500, inclusive of a kit (handouts, a copy of the Ambagan book, and a certificate), and food. Participants who could register and pay on or before July 5, 2013 will be given a 10% discount.
