11th San Agustin Writers Workshop in Iloilo City now accepting manuscripts

The Fray Luis de Leon Creative Writing Institute of the University of San Agustin Center for Research and Publications (UCRP) is now accepting applications for the 11th San Agustin Writers Workshop scheduled on May 1-4, 2013 at the University of San Agustin, Iloilo City.

Interested applicants must submit the following: application letter; letter of recommendation from any faculty member of their school or any established writer in the region; curriculum vitae with colored ID picture, contact numbers (landline/cellphone/email address); parent’s consent to attend the workshop (for minors); and creative works (five poems or two short stories). Works in Akeanon, Hiligaynon, and Kinaray-a must be accompanied with a translation in either English or Filipino. The deadline for applications is on April 10, 2013.

Ten applicants will be chosen for the fellowships, which will include free board and lodging during the workshop. Preference is given to applicants from within the Western Visayas region since the advocacy of the Institute is to support writers in Hiligaynon, Kinaray-a and Akeanon. The names of selected fellows will be announced on April 15, 2013.

This year’s panel is chaired by Antiqueño Prof. John Iremil E. Teodoro of Miriam College, Quezon City. An alumnus of the University of San Agustin, Teodoro was the founding coordinating of the Fray Luis de Leon Creative Writing Institute and the founding editor of SanAg, the University’s literary journal. He was cited as one of the Outstanding Augustinians of the Century during the USA’s centenary in 2004. Teodoro has won five times in the Palanca in the fields of poetry, play, and short story. He has authored and edited 13 books, one of which became a winner in the National Book Awards. He has a master’s degree in Fine Arts, major in Creative Writing, from De La Salle University, where he is currently finishing his Ph.D. in Literature.

Joining Teodoro are Dr. Isidoro M. Cruz, Dr. Alice Tan-Gonzales, and author Metrobank Outstanding teacher, Maria Luisa Defante-Gibraltar.

Cruz won the National Book Award for Literary Criticism for his Cultural Fictions : Narratives on Philippine Popular Culture, Politics, and Literature (University of San Agustin Publishing House, 2004). In 2003, he bagged the Palanca first prize for poetry in English. He earlier won prizes in Homelife and Panorama contests. Cruz is currently dean of the College of Arts and Sciences of the University of San Agustin, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in English and master’s degree in Literature. Like Teodoro, he was cited as one of the Outstanding Augustinians of the Century in 2004 in the field of Culture and Arts He holds a Ph.D. in Literature from De La Salle University.

Tan-Gonzales is a professor at the University of the Philippines in the Visayas. She had won nine times for her short stories in the Palanca Awards, four of which were the top prize. Recently, she was given the National Commission on Culture and the Arts Writers’ Prize for which she would write 15 short stories in Hiligaynon. Tan-Gonzales holds a master’s degree from the Ateneo de Manila University and Ph.D. from the University of the Philippines-Diliman.

Defante-Gibraltar is a prolific short story writer and novelist. She has, to date, published eight novels, and written more than 1,000 short stories. Ang Babaye Sa Lunok, a collection of her short stories, was published by the University of San Agustin Publishing House in 2003. Considered the “Megastar” of contemporary Hiligaynon literature, she had won awards for her short stories from Yuhum Magazine and in the Quin Baterna Short Story Writing Contest. A retired public school teacher, she got the Metrobank Outstanding Teacher Award in 2003.

Dr. Leoncio Deriada, mentor to many writers in the region, has been invited to be the guest lecturer. Deriada is on the Hall of Fame of the Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature. Like Gibraltar, he is also a Metrobank Outstanding Teacher awardee.
