UP Film Institute celebrates National Women’s Month

In fitting observance of the National Women’s Month, the UP Film Institute presents the most compelling depictions of women’s plight on screen this March 2013 at the UPFI Film Center.

Select films in exhibition include titles from Lav Diaz, Sigfried Barros-Sanchez and Racquel Zaballero-Sanchez, Will Fredo, Brillante Mendoza, Veronica Velasco and Pablo Biglang-awa and Jose Javier Reyes.

Strong and captivating women are the predominant mark of the featured films for the premier state university’s first-ever festival of Venezuelan films courtesy of the Embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in Manila.

A special focus is directed at a cycle of Adolfo Alix Jr. films all dwelling on the institution of motherhood with its pronounced reach, impact, extent and strength in a largely matriarchal society such as that of the Philippines.

Two main international women’s features are presented back-to-back as the month’s foremost highlight: Filipina Joanna Vasquez Arong’s “Neo-Lounge” and the latest acclaimed oeuvre from Hollywood’s Kathryn Bigelow–the lone woman in history to have won the Oscar for Best Director.
