Project Banig Zamboanga is an interactive storytelling campaign that promotes the appreciation of localized / folk stories, myths and legends to encourage reading among the indigenous, underprivileged, and vulnerable children of Western Mindanao. The group behind Project Banig Zamboanga are storyteller-adventurers who go to different sites/sights, lay down a ‘banig’ (a woven mat), gather children, bring out a book, and tell a story.
Performances take place in site-specific places making nature its stage. The stories combine prominent indigenous cultural figures/characters to anchor the consciousness of the children to appreciate problems of everyday life. Its interactive nature incites enthusiasm and prompts positive response from the children, making value-formation an extremely meaningful and enjoyable experience- something essential in these times when passivity plagues many societies.
