Project Banig Zamboanga, in cooperation with BoN Review and Training Specialist, will start the Project Banig Summer Art Workshop on April 15, 2013-May 11, 2013 at Hacienda Miranda, Brgy. Sta. Maria, Zamboanga City.

Courses offered for children 8-11 years old are Storytelling for Kids and Basic Cartooning while children ages 12 years old and above have Basic Puppetry and Puppet Making, Storytelling for Teens, and Basic Acting. Classes wil be facilitated by Ateneo de Zamboanga professor and theater director Marco Alfino “Kiko” Miranda and illustrator Victor Ian “Yano” Covarrubias.

Project Banig Zamboanga is an interactive storytelling campaign that promotes the appreciation of localized / folk stories, myths and legends to encourage reading among the indigenous, underprivileged, and vulnerable children of Western Mindanao. The group behind Project Banig Zamboanga are storyteller-adventurers who go to different sites/sights, lay down a ‘banig’ (a woven mat), gather children, bring out a book, and tell a story.

Performances take place in site-specific places making nature its stage. The stories combine prominent indigenous cultural figures/characters to anchor the consciousness of the children to appreciate problems of everyday life. Its interactive nature incites enthusiasm and prompts positive response from the children, making value-formation an extremely meaningful and enjoyable experience- something essential in these times when passivity plagues many societies.
