The UP Film Institute announces its screenings for May 2013 at the UPFI Film Center in observance of the National Heritage Month and as a salute to all the Filipino filmmakers participating in this year’s Festival de Cannes led by Lav Diaz and Adolfo Alix Jr. who will both premiere their films officially selected for Un Certain Regard – the competitive section for upstream cinema of the world’s most prestigious filmfest.
To signify what can be considered as a strong Philippine presence at Cannes this year, some of the recent films of Alix and Diaz are once more brought back to the big screen in acknowledgement respectively of their distinguished bodies of work.

Karera by Adolfo Alix Jr. (May 7 & 8, 2:30 pm, Cine Adarna)
The premier state university joins the entire nation in celebrating Philippine heritage with a string of presentations foremost of which is multi-awarded Fil-Am filmmaker Benito Bautista’s twinbill of much acclaimed documentary features. Director Bautista will grace the screenings for a dialog and interaction with viewing audiences.
The Pangasinan take on the saga of Philippine diaspora lies at the core of Christopher Gozum’s Lawas Kan Pinabli.
For its commitment to boost the culture of film clubs, the UP Film Institute holds Cinemalibre screenings with CINEPHILES!
In a run-up to this year’s Philippine elections, Vincent Sandoval’s Cinemalaya production is paired with a Joel Lamangan retrospective entry as one big premiere in a timely turn is lined up for the new screen satire Juana Change the Movie starring Mae Paner, written by Rody Vera and directed by Jade Castro.
A two-part Lino Brocka special constitutes the month’s hallmark for a look at the cinema of the country’s National Artists that segues to UP Film Institute’s own focus on the past schoolyear’s harvest of most outstanding films from the ranks of its graduates.
Further highlights include continuing showcase for a package of Venezuelan films care of the Embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and a number of celebrated Philippine classics in conjunction with the Roman Catholic Church’s Year of Faith, in honor of the memory of Danny Zialcita and as a homage to specific films respectively from Maryo J. de los Reyes and Mario O’Hara on their commemorative year.

The University of the Philippines Film Institute, member of the CILECT/International Association of Film and Television Schools, is the only film school in the country that offers Bachelors and Masters degree in Film and Media Studies in Film. One of its main facilities is the UP Film Center which houses Cine Adarna (Main Theater), an 800-seater cinema located at Magsaysay Avenue and Osmena Avenue, UP Diliman; the Ishmael Bernal Gallery, an artist’s space reserved for multimedia exhibits and installaitions located at the back of the main theater; and the Videotheque, located at the 2nd Floor of the Ishmael Bernal Gallery.
