The 11th Asia TEFL International Conference with the theme “Englishes Across Asian Contexts: Opportunities and Challenges” will be held in the Philippines for the first time on 26-28 October, 2013 at the Ateneo de Manila campus. It will hosted by the Ateneo de Manila University English Department, Ateneo Center for English Language Teaching (ACELT) and Ateneo Language Learning Center (ALLC).
Recognizing that teaching and learning English today is changing in a world that has become more diverse in its cultures and contexts, about a thousand teachers, learners, language scholars, researchers, and administrators across Asia and beyond the region are expected to attend this 3-dayconference.
Teachers of English today find themselves in a period of genuine conversation and dialogue among themselves. They are confronted both by the challenges of diversity in cultures and contexts, and by the reality of a language that is dynamic and changing. Discussion is not just about one English, but of Englishes.
The Asia TEFL conference provides a venue for critical rethinking and discussion of relevant concerns in English language teaching in Asia today. In particular, the presentations at this conference will seek to raise a more informed awareness of Englishes in Asian contexts and facilitate the negotiation of more appropriate classroom practices and research endeavors for more effective policies and pedagogies.
