If tonight was your last night on Earth, what would be your fondest memories? Would you feel ready to say goodbye to those you love, or would you regret all the broken relationships you failed to mend? Would you be satisfied with the legacy you’re leaving behind or would you struggle to remember the last great thing you did?
A New Brain dives into the psyche of the human mind and portrays each character as a manifestation of the id, ego and superego. The story is full of themes of self-discovery, acceptance, and change, but focused on the importance of personal relationships and fleeting time. The Ateneo Blue Repertory’s staging of A New Brain will take the audience on a surreal journey into the depths of the human mind and inspire them to introspect on life.
A NEW BRAIN follows the story of a disillusioned yet talented songwriter, Gordon Schwinn who is diagnosed with a rare medical condition that sends him into a coma and a brain surgery that could potentially end his life. Throughout the musical, Gordon’s greatest fear of dying with his greatest songs still left inside of him, as well as past hurts and emotional scars, are unearthed by memories and figures from his past who he conjures to his side as he walks through the proverbial valley of the shadow of death.
Christopher de Venecia, nominated for Best Director in Broadway World Philippines Awards 2011 for his work in Ateneo Blue Repertory’s Little Shop of Horrors, returns to the blueREP stage to direct. Dana Marquez and Gala Sanchez work together as musical directors. Nina de Leon returns to blueREP to choreograph.
A New Brain stars Arion Sanchez as the composer Gordon Schwinn with Angelo Lantaco as his charming and affectionate lover, Roger. Lara Antonio plays as Gordon’s agent and former flame, Rhoda while Christina Amante and Ciary Manhit play the mother. Storm Sevilla plays the tyrannical Mr. Bungee and Trish Arcega as the show-stopping Homeless Lady. Also in the cast are Bernice Reyes, Wrench Canicosa, Rio Tanchuling, Bryan Mendoza, Ian Hermogenes, and Franco Ramos.
