Tanghalang Pilipino is producing SAN ANDRES B not just for a fleeting dress-up affair to celebrate the 150th birthday of Andres Bonifacio, hopefully, not just a “sing now and forget him tomorrow, and remember him again on his 200th birthday” event.
National Artist Virgilio Almario, librettist of SAN ANDRES B is presenting a new inspired look into the human psyche of Bonifacio-his sense of heroism that had its roots from his deep love for his family, his folk community and its unique cultural traditions, faith and beliefs, and from his sensitivity and his in-born, natural, heroic, unwavering stand and defense of the basic human rights, justice and freedom of every human being, therefore, of every Filipino. Almario aims to rekindle our contemporary society’s love of our country, our people and our culture.
For this noble aim of Almario, who is best to complement his intentions but, another artist whose passion for discovering and enhancing what is Filipino in us and our culture, is as burning as the National Artist’s–Chino Toledo, a consummate Filipino musical artist. Professor Toledo’s compositions for SAN ANDRES B are born out of the same heroic passion to define and express through the art of music what it means to be a Filipino. He will challenge and provoke you to allow his music to touch the strings of your Filipino heart and soul.
SAN ANDRES B is a theater production, not just a literary masterpiece of a National Artist, nor is it just a concert of a Maestro. It needs a weaver of the different artistic elements to make a beautiful whole. SAN ANDRES B has a story to tell, a plot to develop, a “country” to recreate on stage, characters that breath, that must to come to life, to re-live life, to struggle and fight, to die for a noble cause. SAN ANDRES B’s Director Floy Quintos is the unanimous choice of Almario, Toledo, and Tanghalang Pilipino. Quintos comes from the same creative nationalistic bloodline of the librettist and the composer-romantic Filipino artist activist, another uncompromising master unifier of the elements of theater arts who will settle for nothing less than artistic excellence, wisdom of content, life-changing impact in every production that he puts his hands, mind and heart on.
SAN ANDRES B, a modern Filipino opera, is a project of Tanghalang Pilipino, in cooperation with the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), and the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP).
