The Philippine High School for the Arts, in partnership with the Makiling Center for Mountain Ecosystems (MCME) and the PHSA Alumni Association, will celebrate its first-ever Foundation Day through a one-day fun-filled and momentuous event entitled Araw ng PHSA. It will be held on June 11, 2014, 7 am onwards, at the National Arts Center, Mt. Makiling, Los Baños, Laguna.
Since its inception in 1977, PHSA had never celebrated its foundation day. Thus, Araw ng PHSA will be a major milestone in the history of the school.
Araw ng PHSA will be in honor of Inang Kalikasan, Inang Bayan, and Inang Paaralan. For Inang Kalikasan part, environmental awareness will be created through a talk — Pangangalaga at Pag-aalaga — facilitated by Dr. Nathaniel Bantayan of MCME to be followed by a tree-planting activity in the morning. For the Inang Bayan segment, there will be a “Meet and Greet” with the first PHSA alumni Batch Tolentino ’79, which includes world-renowned Ms. Rowena S. Arrieta, composer of the PHSA hymn, and Atty. Floyd Douglas Nicolas B. Pichay, a Carlos Palanca Awards for Literature Hall of Famer, among others. The invited notable PHSA alumni will hopefully transmute the idea of giving something back to the country, into reality, among the students. For the Inang Paaralan portion, both PHSA students and alumni are expected prepare performances, art exhibits, film or video presentations, to name a few, in a big night also known as Ibarang Jam!
Customary in every major event in PHSA, such as the opening of the First Makiling Intercultural Arts Festival (MAKILINC) last February, the opening of Araw ng PHSA will commence with a ritual for Maria Makiling for nurturing young student-artists through the years.
