The Unyon ng mga Manunulat sa Pilipinas (UMPIL), the country’s largest organisation of Filipino writers, will hold its annual national literature conference and writers’ congress on August 28-30, 2014, at the College of Mass Communications, University of the Philippines, Diliman.
The conference takes the theme of “Ang Rehiyonal na Panitikan Bilang Pambansang Panitikan” (Regional Literature as National Literature).
This year’s conference will headline plenary lectures by fictionist and scholar Dr. Rosario Cruz-Lucero (UP Diliman), and Department of Education Undersecretary Dina S. Ocampo. The conference also features UMPIL’s Adrian Cristobal Lecture by Pasyon and Revolution author Dr. Reynaldo Ileto.
Speakers include Jose Jason Chancoco (Ateneo de Naga University), Dr. Jaime An Lim (Far Eastern University), and Dr. Hope Sabanpan-Yu (University of San Carlos, Cebu) for Poetics of Regional Literature; Dr. Oscar V. Campomanes (Ateneo de Manila University), Dr. David Jonathan Bayot (De La Salle University, Manila), and Dr. J. Pilapil Jacobo (Ateneo de Manila University) on the Critical Tradition in the Philippines;
Dr. Victor Emmanuel Carmelo Nadera, Jr. (University of the Philippines, Diliman), Dr. Maria Luisa F. Torres Reyes (Ateneo de Manila University), and Ani Rosa Almario-David (The Raya School) for Literature in the Time of K-12 and Mother Tongue Based Education; and Dr. Alvin Yapan (Ateneo de Manila University), J.I.E. Teodoro (Miriam College), and Patrick Campos (University of the Philippines Film Institute) for Regional Literature in Film.
The conference also features teaching demonstrations by Lilibeth Oblena-Quire (Miriam College), Salvador Biglaen (Miriam College), and Jethro Tenorio (Ateneo de Manila University).
During the UMPIL Congress, a Writers Forum on “What is Asian in Philippine Literature” will be held, featuring Dr. Dinah Roma (De La Salle University, Manila), D.M. Reyes (Ateneo de Manila University) and Dr. Jose Wendell Capili (University of the Philippines, Diliman).
UMPIL is also set to give out its annual awards in the congress—the Pambansang Alagad ni Balagtas (for outstanding achievement in writing), the Gawad Paz Marquez Benitez (for outstanding achievement in literature and language teaching), and the Gawad Pedro Bucaneg (for outstanding achievement of a literary group or organization).
The congress is supported by the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, the Department of Education, the Commission on Higher Education,the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Philippine Soong Ching Ling Foundation.
A registration fee of P 3,000 will be charged to cover for the kits, conference meals, handouts, and certificates.
