Cinemalaya 2014: Schedule, Synopses, Trailers, and Ticket Info

cinemalayaxThe first day of August marked the opening of the much-awaited Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival and Competition, now billed as Cinemalaya X, as it observes a decade of developing and promoting Filipino independent filmmaking. Cinemalaya X premieres 25 new digital films in the three competition categories: New Breed Full Length Feature, Directors Showcase, and Short Feature, on August 1-10 2014 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. Moviegoers also have the option of watching at satellite venues in Greenbelt Makati, Alabang Town Center, TriNoma, and Fairview Terraces.

Opening Ceremonies was held earlier, August 1, 2014, 6 PM at the CCP Main Lobby, immediately followed by the screening of “DOCUMENTED,” a documentary film by Jose Antonio Vargas, at the CCP Main Theater. Both events were free admission.

Celebrating ‘A Decade of Connecting Dimensions,’ the production of 118 full feature independent films and 96 short films in total, and the promotion of over 1,000 full feature films, shorts, documentaries, Filipino film classics, and art films, the Festival will also be holding special events. These include the launch of the Cinemalaya X book, a commemorative publication chronicling the history of Cinemalaya and its contributions to Philippine cinema, on August 3 at the CCP; the introduction of the Cinemalaya Achievement Award, to be given to the filmmaker or organization who has exhibited outstanding and distinguished work in Philippine independent cinema; the announcement and unveiling of the Cinemalaya Logo Animation Contest Winner, now used as the new opening billboard for all Cinemalaya competitions in place of the 2D Cinemalaya logo animation created in 2006; and an exhibition at the CCP Bulwagang Juan Luna (Main Gallery) and Pasilyo Vicente Manansala (2F Hallway Gallery) called ‘Cinemalaya @ 10: In Retrospect,’ an exhibition of posters, archival materials, and trailers of the Cinemalaya competition films since 2005.

As in the case for every year, the Cinemalaya 2014 Exhibit features posters and memorabilia from the competing films of the year at the Bulwagang Carlos V. Francisco (Little Theater Lobby). The CCP Main Theater Lobby, on the other hand, serves as an exhibition area for special portraits of the competing filmmakers. This year’s guest photographers are renowned Jun de Leon and Timothy de Leon.

The Cinemalaya Forum Series, which replaces the yearly Cinemalaya Congress, will be held on August 5 (9 am – 5 pm) and August 6 (9 am to 2:30 pm) at the CCP Little Theater. Speakers at the Forum will examine the state of digital filmmaking in the Philippines and the impact of Cinemalaya on the industry. The Forum series offers seven sessions on the various aspects of digital filmmaking. For inquiries about the Cinemalaya Forum Series, contact Mr. Ian Darwin Wong, CCP Multimedia Producer – Audience Development Division at 832-1125 local 1700.
