New CHED centers of excellence, development announced for humanities

CHED Research Grants and Funding for Faculty ResearchesThe Commission on Higher Education (CHED) en banc released last April 15, 2013, the list of new centers of excellence (COE) and centers of development (COD) for the fields of philosophy, music, literature, foreign language, Filipino, and English.

As part of the Higher Education Act of 1994, the CHED’s Centers of Excellence Project designates centers to serve as “potent catalysts for world-class scholarships, best practices, innovative curriculum, research and extension, and professional development,” according to its memo.

The commission, “through the recommendation of the Technical Panel for Humanities Education,” has designated the following programs as COEs and CODs:

Philosophy: Centers of Excellence: University of Santo Tomas and Ateneo de Manila University; Center of Development: University of San Carlos, Cebu.

Music: Centers of Excellence: Philippine Women’s University; St. Paul University, Manila; St. Scholastica’s College; University of Santo Tomas; University of the Philippines-Diliman.

Literature: Centers of Excellence: University of the Philippines Diliman (Departments of Comparative Literature and Filipino at Panitikan ng Pilipinas); Ateneo de Manila University (Department of English); De La Salle University; Centers of Development: University of Santo Tomas; Ateneo de Manila University (Department of Filipino); Xavier University, Cagayan de Oro.

Foreign Language: Center of Excellence: University of the Philippines-Diliman

Filipino: Centers of Excellence: University of the Philippines Diliman and De La Salle University; Centers of Development: Mindanao State University; Polytechnic University of the Philippines.

English: Center of Excellence: University of the Philippines-Diliman; Center of Development: Ateneo de Zamboanga University; Bukidnon State University; University of Southeastern Philippines.

The designation, the memo said, will last until May 31, 2014. The centers “may avail of financial assistance on a project proposal basis geared towards the development of the programs.”
